Creating a more diverse learning ecosystem
Citizens in the United States and in countries around the world are taking to the streets to campaign for equal rights for all. The movement sparked by the death of African-American George Floyd has also ignited a renewed appeal for change in education systems. Calls have been made in the UK and the US to include minority history, culture and achievements in school curricula, as excluding minority representation in school curriculum can give children skewed representations of their societies and a tinted world view.
By no fault of theirs, teachers may also unknowingly perpetuate stereotypes. Changing the system thus means educating teachers and bringing role models into schools, be it recruiting teachers from diverse cultural groups or including literature by minorities or those featuring minority protagonists.
Discrimination has been present in society for far too long. It’s time for governments and schools to create a more diverse learning ecosystem.
