Remote learning strategies and innovations
As schools find ways to deliver remote learning to all students, we can take lessons from history on how to make it work. During the polio outbreak in 1937, when schools in Chicago, the United States were closed, the city broadcasted “radio school” for three weeks of quarantine, establishing the foundations of strong partnerships between public schools and the Chicago Radio Council that last even today. In 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic, radio school remains one of the most prevalent ways hard-to-reach students in rural communities can access education.
Schools can also capitalise on building strong partnerships with government bodies and external providers to obtain resources that enhance remote teaching and learning; in Singapore, for example, the Ministry of Education teamed up with tech giants such as Apple and Microsoft to provide students with digital devices for learning.
In response to prevailing difficulties schools face in delivering remote learning, The HEAD Foundation’s upcoming Making HEADway series, starting this Thursday, brings together experienced and transformative educators in Southeast Asia to discuss how we can bridge the gaps in remote learning.
