Issue 126: Underpaid and exhausted, teachers are leaving the profession

The United States faces a shortage of at least 300,000 teachers; some educators who left teaching during the pandemic cite inadequate compensation, overwhelming workloads, and insufficient institutional support for public education as the defining factors for their departure. Similar opinions of the teaching profession are also echoed in the United Kingdom, where a former headteacher cites long hours, pay cuts, and abusive parents as top reasons why schools struggle to find willing applicants for headship.
